Customer Story – DFKI
Many companies are wondering how to present information to their customers, visitors and guests in the best possible way: up-to-date, freely accessible and around the clock. The German Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI GmbH), Kaiserslautern, is one of the international “centers of excellence” in the research realm. With SemVox talkingTerminal the German Center for Artificial Intelligence has found a solution that keeps their visitors up-to-date while at the same time underlining the innovative traits of the institute – also with regard to corporate communications.
Access information via speech and touch
In March 2011, two talkingTerminals were installed at the window front of the DFKI building in Kaiserlautern. The through-glass-touch technology makes sure that information on the interactive window can be accessed via touch just like on a smartphone. An even more intuitive way is an access via speech input. DFKI visitors may direct questions such as “Where are the different branches of DFKI located?” at the talkingTerminal. The contact person is a female virtual character that represents the friendly and competent “face” of the interactive window. The virtual lady is able to recognize passing persons thanks to a camera-based presence recognition. She greets visitors with the words “Welcome to DFKI magazine. Have a look and ask me what you would like to know!” and thereby invites them to request more information on current projects. Excellent microphone connection and a robust speech recognition renders the dialog between man and machine perfectly possible even with an extensive background noise.
The combination of touch interaction, virtual character as well as speech input and output technologies makes an especially natural interaction possible.
Always up to date with the Content Management System
The built-in Content Management System (CMS) makes sure that new information can be accessed on the interactive window with only a few clicks. The technologies used such as virtual characters, speech recognition and speech synthesis are complex. Nevertheless, current content is easy to process within the Content Management System. The possibility to upload information within a very short time was an important criteria for choosing talkingTerminal as the medium of communication for Udo Urban, Head of Project for the interactive window at the DFKI: “It is essential for our corporate communication that information in our interactive window is always up-to-date. The talkingTerminal Content Management System makes this very easy and very efficient.”
All information to “take away”
Contact forms enable visitors to get in touch with the DFKI and to subscribe to further information via E-Mail. QR codes lead to further information on DFKI websites. Smartphone owners are able to scan these codes and are automatically redirected to the intended contents. The different possibilities to interact with talkingTerminal generate interest in the DFKI and its achievements and projects. Udo Urban states that “SemVox talkingTerminal underlines the innovative character of our research institute and makes sure that our visitors are always up-to-date with regard to our projects.”
